There are over thousands of Cambodian street kids roaming the Cambodian street day and night. These children are mainly orphans who were abandoned by their parents and left to survive on their own. They all come from a history of a abusive family, HIV carrier, poverty, and lack of education. Many of them live on the streets and prowl the street at night.

If you take a moment and look closely into the eye of a Cambodian child, you will see their eyes are full of sorrow, lost of hope, a cry for love and affection and most importantly the need of nutritional food, which has left their bodies brittle and weak.

However we can change this sight, if we all lend each other a hand we can make a difference. YCSCO tries to provide hope and support to these vulnerable children.
With many supports from our donors for foods, books, equipments, and gift funds, our Cambodian kids can be provided with the simple necessity of life such as well nourished meals, safe home, education, care and support. Your Cambodian Street Children Organization (YCSCO) is a local Khmer organization which was established in October 2007. Our goal is simple: to rescue Cambodian street kids and disadvantage children from the dark and to provide them a light to guide them into the future. We help all who are orphan, poor, uneducated, abused victims and abandon children. Many abandon children had lost their parents due to AIDS.

The organization strives to find donors and financial funding to run each project and to support each child. We search for donors and supporters across the globe and has attracted many different interest groups with different motives. The majority of them opened their heart and gave us full support with our projects and plans.Many of these children live off the street in unsanitary environments. They scattered in the streets working for some little money to support themselves such as selling newspapers, digging in trash for some leftover meals, and etc…

This is their everyday life!

Further quality education is expensive and is highly impossible for them. Therefore we are working hard to find funds and support to enable them the ability of further education.

Your Cambodian street children organization (YCSCO) is a Cambodian Non-Governmental Organization. It was established in October 2007. The purpose was to establish an NGO to motivate donors, assist the Cambodian government, and to provide a means to save vulnerable street children, and to help in the reduction of poverty and to help the local Cambodian community Co-Founders

My name is Sorn Lorn, I was born in Phnom Penh. I have been through many things in my life. You could say I have seen it all, the good, the bad and the ugly. My experience in life has

taught me many things, to never give up and to never lose hope. Good people will receive good in return bad people will see hell before their life is over.

I have witness the suffering of the Cambodian children and community first hand, I have also faced harsh circumstance in my self so I know how it feels to have sleepless nights of hunger and pain both mentally and physically.

I have told my self, I won’t allow any one to suffer the way I did, I will try my best to help the street children off the streets and in to schools for a better future. I will help to be apart of their lives, providing shelter, food, water, safety, education, training and family love.

Throughout my life I have been volunteering in many NGO helping street kids and orphans to gain sight into a better future, better life, and to become a better person. I have studied Japanese for 4 years from NGO who gave me the skill to teach foreign language to disadvantage kids and people.

When I see them learning, smiling, eating, sleeping, and playing, I see in them the love and comforts they never receive before. It was not until I met Miss Rom Him and Miss Maily Duong who inspired me to start Your Cambodian Street Children Organization to help rescue more of the 19,000 street kids and orphans roaming in Cambodia. Together, we share the passion, the love, and the hard works we had put in to create YCSCO as a new home and beginning for many kids.

My name is Rom Him. I was born in Thailand and raised in United States of America as Cambodian American since I was 2 years. Living in the largest Khmer community in the United States, Long Beach, California, I have learned the history of Khmer, cultures, traditions, and values through my family, friends, and role models. Even though I can only speak the language but the respect, heritage and Khmer prides is fully absorb in me.

I have never visit Cambodia but have heard and seen the pity stories and images of many disadvantages poor people in Cambodia. Each day they wake up early before the sunrise and start their day as a seller, a farmer, a beggar, a trash digger, or a poor worker. I realize that these people have missed the chance to receive education; the highly respected skills and knowledge everyone need to gain a better life.

I don’t need to go to Cambodia to know how their life is like. Just witnessing some American here who are poor is enough for me how hard those Cambodia life can be for such a disadvantage people. If living here in United States cans still struggle, imagine them….

To prevent this, education is the key to live a better quality life and we need to start with kids. Kids are the future of the country. There are many abandoned kids walking around in Cambodia as I have seen in news. But how can I help I ask myself? The only thing I can do is donating some few dollars of mine to them, but I want to do more.

I always have the passion to help others and to see and hear many pitiful and sorrow stories of the future generation kids, my heart break even more. I thought I couldn’t help much because I am far. But when I knew YCSCO president, Mr. Sorn Lorn and Australian secretary Miss Maily Duong, who have inspired me to make my dream a reality, we started to work really hard to bring in new home and hope for the children.

My name is Maily Duong. I am an Australian born Cambodian. So all I have known all my life is the great land of Australia.
However I was taught at a very young age to never forget my roots, I still carry my Cambodian heritage with pride and honor even though I am unable to write in the Khmer but I can speak and try my very best to up hold my culture.

I have been back to Cambodia twice now; both of my visits have been unforgettable with both happy and sad memories. I think I had the biggest reality shock, I knew that Cambodia was a third world country and there was a lot of poverty and corruption, but I it hadn’t hit home till I arrived in Phnom Penh.

I got to witness with my own two eyes the suffering of the Cambodian people; the most important thing that really broke my heart was to see young children in pain and poverty.
I have never let my self forget the image of a begging child or the grandmother begging for a warm meal. My heart felt a deep sharp pain, I had told my self at the age of 15 years old that I will come back to Cambodia and help these children and the Cambodian community.

Though I did know who these people were, in my heart they were my family, my little bother, sister, mother, father, uncle, aunty, grand mother and grand father. They didn’t have to be blood related for me to feel a connection just being Cambodian was enough. To see them suffer was like seeing a family member in need of help; this was why I felt so strongly about helping the Khmer community.

I had felt lost; I didn’t know how I could help; I always thought that I was too young, what can I do? However I did volunteer in several programs to help the Cambodian orphans.
Now I’m 20 years old and for the first time I felt, that I can achieve my dreams of helping my fellow Cambodians. I have searched for an organization which shared the same goals and objectives as me.

It was only when I met the YCSCO president Mr. Sorn Lorn and secretary Miss Rom Him when I realized that I was able to do something about my dream and able to finally help these children. All three of us shared the same passion and dreams, this was one of the reasons why we all decided to form a international non-profit organization called
“YOUR CAMBODIAN STREET CHILDREN ORGANIZATION” where our mission is to make a difference.

Welcome to Your Cambodian Street Children Organization.

On the 31 st January 2008, we had the privilege to welcome back Mr. Werner ‘s friend to visit our organization. The children were extremely excited to meet her and all commented on how beautiful she was. They had bought cakes to share with the children; the children were extremely happy to received cakes as a special treat. Their eyes gleamed; they smiled and grinned from ear to ear. The day at school was even more sweet and a great day to remember.

These children can only express their gratitude the best way they know how with both hands and a big thank you from their small hearts.

We all at YCSCO would like to thank Mr. Werner and your friend for taking the time to visit our organization and the children! As well as a big thank you for their generous donations of money and cakes.

The children will never forget these special treats, as this is more then they could have ever imagined, most of these children couldn’t have even had a decent meal let alone a sweet cake as a treat.

Over all the children had a great day and it was a memorial event.

ACTIVITIES

Language study

Since the starting of the education program of teaching English, Japanese, and Chinese, we have 110 enrolled students and 100 students attend the class every evening from 5:30 pm-7:30 pm. Here are the schedules of classes:

Evening class from 5:30pm - 6:30 pm
· English for beginner
· English for intermediate

Evening class from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm

· Japanese for beginner
· Chinese for beginner

Starting up of the day classes

YCSCO would love to offer day classes to students for Khmer language. However, finding qualified volunteer Khmer teachers is hard and let alone hiring Khmer teachers is out of the question.

In order to start daytime activity, we need qualified volunteers or funds to hire 2 Khmer teachers. These teachers’ salary will be $150 a month teaching for 4 hours a day.
YCSCO want to ask for your donation or sponsor to make the day class a reality.

VISITING TIME

YCSCO welcome all sponsors and donors to come and visit us in the facility. We want you to see and experience the love from children who yearn to learn who committed to come in the evening everyday from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm. Therefore, we encourage you to come from 5:30 pm- 7:30 pm when students are learning and classes are in session. Visiting outside of the time permitted, you will not see any activities on site since during daytime students go to study Khmer in other places. They will come in the evening to learn English, Japanese, and Chinese.

Activities for our Cambodian street children organization:

English Class
5:30pm-6:30pm

The largest class is the head start elementary English. They are also the first course offer during the evening with 50 students in one room.

English class (6.30pm-7.30pm)

These students are learning Chinese on the rooftop of the building.

Korean class

From 5pm -6.30pm on Saturday and Sunday

We have had an over whelming response as eager student sign up for the lessons.

YCSCO has just started a new Korean class for students

How ever we are still in need of more Korean volunteer teachers, if you’re interested in helping and working with children please contact YCSCO as soon as possible.

Chinese class (6.30pm-7.30pm)

Here 4 students are learning Chinese on the first floor in the next room. Even though there aren’t proper tables and chairs, students are still dedicated to learn.

Japanese class (6.30pm-7.30pm)

Each evening on the first floor, our YCSCO’s President, Sorn Lorn, teaches Japanese course. There are 20 students.

Elementary English(5.30pm-6.30pm)

These students are learning 1st grade English on the rooftop. They are so dedicated and eager to learn English even in the cold.

Physical Education….an exercise for the body and mind

Every weekend evening from 5:00pm-6:00pm, YCSCO make sure that kids get active exercise so they can stay healthy and refresh their minds.

Our Projects

Your Cambodian Street Children Organization Orphanage Projects
The courses developed here are to help with the development of skills that they will be able to use to find jobs and to manage a sustainable life.

We work with volunteer teachers who have had many years of experiences in their specialty areas of teaching. Teachers can create their own curriculum of study offering to students after approval from the committees. Because of the school settings in different provinces, applicants should consider their shelter arrangement in advance as well as the safety of their well-being.

Salaries are based on the living condition of those teachers who work for college and universities in Cambodia, except those who are from countries other than Cambodia will be compensated according to their expertise in the areas of teaching.Each course runs for one semester. Each student who graduates with a certificate from a previous course can register for the next one.

Building Sleep Rooms Project
YCSCO centre is planning to convert a rooftop of the facility into two separated big sleeping rooms for both boys and girls. The dimension of the rooftop is 20 m x 5 m. The project is planned when enough funds are made to let children have a warm place to sleep in. The cost of the project is estimated to be $4000.

Furniture Buy in Project
Upon the completion of the Building Sleeping Room Project, the rooms need 25 beds, 25 bedspreads, 25 pillows, 25 blankets, and 25 clothe drawers.

Cambodia is one of the developing countries full of wonderful people and scenery. Unfortunately, more than 19,000 Cambodian children are orphans. They scattered across town and street looking for places to stay and often dig foods directly from filthy trash hoping to find some good delicious left over meals.

Their everyday lives consists of roaming the streets, digging and touching trashes, hang out with other orphans (god knows what they are doing…drugs, robbery, begging…etc), and end their day by sleeping in the cold without warm blanket to cover their shivering body. Most are heavily affected with lice and have developed health problem.

With no one to provide shelter or care, many of these orphaned and abandoned children become undernourished and will not receive an education. Police often view street orphans as a menace to the community rather than minors that need their protection. They will grow up without ever feeling loved.

Your Cambodian Street Children Organization is struggling to improve the condition.

YCSCO is resource poor and need volunteers to run many programs. Volunteers can play a genuine responsibility to improve the life of orphans by providing education and extra curricular activities. Working in an orphanage is a perfect place for volunteers willing to share love, passion, and efforts for poor kids. You can make a difference by spending your next vacation helping orphans and abandoned children. Play with children in orphanage, teach street children, and have an experience you'll never forget.

Role of a volunteer

There are many activities to improve the educational and skills enhancement of the children. Volunteers depending on the need of a project and skills/interests can involve in any of the following activities:

· Teach languages, education, and life skills (1-2 hours a day)
· Help kids dress up
· Organizing fun extracurricular activities
· Helping kids in homework
· Help in food prep and distribution
· Assist in any other works
· Have fun with kids
· Helping with administration works

YCSCO will assist you in every step to make sure your stay with us is fun and valuable. When volunteers arrive, they will have peace of mind that YCSCO has already prepared for them.

1.: Candidates to volunteer positions must provide:

-full CV-recommendation
-police record (extrait de casier judiciaire) when possible.

2:Candidates must have a specialty that will be useful to staff and the work of Your Cambodian Street Children organization

3. YCSCO is not a training organization and, therefore, cannot accept students who need to gain field experience unless they can bring a specific skill to the teams or can carry out a specific duty that is useful to the organization in accordance with article 4.

4:Candidates will always work with staff (not with the children directly) to provide specific training, or will carry out a specific duty that will reduce the workload of the staff in administrative capacities (research, reports, presentations…)

5:No project is to disturb and interfere in the education/training curriculum of the children and must adapt to the YCSCO lesson plans and time-tables

7:All candidates that are approved will sign a contract and a job description based on the project proposal with YOUR CAMBODIAN STREET CHILDREN ORGANIZATION . The contract will be time-bound with expected results clearly identified. Maximum length of contract is 3 months, but can be renewed.

6. Working hours will be agreed to for purposes of communication and contact and in the event that there is any claim made by or against a volunteer. Volunteers must advise the Program Convenor they are working with if they cannot commit to the agreed hours on any occasion.

7. Any breach of the volunteer agreement will result in a first verbal warning from the Program coordinator or Program Convener to the volunteer. A second breach will result in a written warning and then a termination of volunteer contract.

8. Appropriate recognition will be given to all volunteers who assist with YCSCO projects.

9. Volunteering is not to be a process for recruiting new employees as it is a breach of the volunteer policy. Voluntary Service - It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.

11: YCSCO has a system for managing its volunteers that supports the Organization’s goals and objectives and has clear lines of responsibility.

12: Volunteers will be recruited, screened, placed and developed according to organizational needs.

13: YCSCO will provide volunteers with appropriate levels of support, management and orientation

14: YCSCO appreciates the work of its volunteers and is committed to recognizing their valuable contribution for their time and service.

15: YCSCO will review its volunteer management systems to ensure best practice is followed.

Welcome Our visiters

Love the Khmer culture! Nothing shows more Khmer spirit than having karma wrap around your neck like the Marcel couple whom are from Switzerland. They are very excited to see the children just as much as Dennis who is from Australia who is showing kids where on the globe Australia can be found.

The children and teachers are so delighted to see our regular sponsor Mr. Werner, who have visit YCSCO 3 times this year. Mr. Werner is smiling happily in his white shirt while his friends introduce themselves to the children.

After a brief understanding of our sponsor, they went to the rooftop to get some fresh air.

A very special treat for them kids are more school supplies, fruits, and a smile on their face.

The YCSCO Child Protection Policy Statement

This policy is formulated and outlines the Your Cambodian street children’s organization commitment to ensuring that we strive for the best protection of children’s rights, safety, respect, health and well being.

Introduction:

Your Cambodian street children organization is highly committed to providing protection to all children; we take our duty of care seriously and are responsibly for the welfare and safety of all children.

We ensure that any person working and dealing with children in any particular job that has power or influence over any child is monitored and controlled to ensure the safety of children as well as to prevent any abuse of this position.

YCSCO is committed to the protection of all children from all forms of harm. In particular the safety and wellbeing of the children involved in YCSCO programs is a paramount concern. YCSCO also supports the rights and welfare of all our staff and volunteers and encourages their active participation in creating safe and respectful workplaces while on assignment and to provide clear guidelines for overseas volunteers.

This policy provides guidance and applies to all “representatives” (staff, volunteers, sponsors, visitors, trustees, contract workers implementing partners) on the acceptable behaviors and appropriate boundaries when working with children.

The YCSCO policy defines “A child” as being any person 18 years and under, regardless of the age of consent locally.

YCSCO staffs and volunteers will not:

· Engage in any behavior that is intended to shame, humiliate, belittle or degrade children

· Use language, make suggestions or offer advice that is inappropriate, offensive or abusive

· Do things of a personal nature that a child can do for him/herself, such as assistance with toileting or changing clothes

·Take children to their own home or sleep in the same room or bed as a child

·Smack, hit or physically assault children

·Develop sexual relationships with children or relationships with children that in any way be deemed exploitative or abusive

·Act in ways that may be abusive or place a child at risk of abuse

·Behave physically in a manner that is inappropriate or sexually provocative towards a child

·Condone, or participate in, behavior of children which is illegal, unsafe or abusive

· Act in a way that shows unfair differential treatment, or favoring particular children to the exclusion of others

·Photograph or video a child without the consent of the child and his/her parents or guardians

·Hold, kiss, cuddle or touch a child in an inappropriate, unnecessary or culturally insensitive way. Touching should: only be in response to the need of the child; be only with the child’s permission (except in an emergency situation); avoid the breasts, buttocks and groin; and be open and non-secretive.

YCSCO will increase awareness:

.All representatives will be individually and collectively responsible for the protection and will be aware of the policy and related guidelines, and code of practice

. All staff will be responsible for monitoring children protection issues and will facilitate the policy implementation, staff training and awareness as well as reporting

.Children friendly information will be provided to ensure children understand about their rights, safety. Protection and feel comfortable about if they have any concerns

Recruitment & Representatives

.Procedure for the recruitment of staff will take into account and promote the YCSCO including, where necessary, requesting background information and reference check at times there will also warrant a police back ground check to ensure that safety of the children.

.All successful candidates and existing representatives will be educated on these policy and will sign the code of conduct prior to commencing work

.Child protection issues will be considered during staff appraisals and evaluations

.All staff and representatives will need to obey all parts of the policy any code of conduct broken will be investigated and prosecuted.

Communications & information

.YCSCO will ensure that all information or images about children are never used in away which compromise the children’s dignity as a human being.

.We will respect the confidentiality of information regarding children’s health, family background and personal history: this private information will only be accessed by authorized staff for important legal issues.

Guidelines for prevention

·Treat every child with dignity and respect regardless of differences of ethnicity, religion, age, ability, gender, sexual orientation and economic circumstances

·Conduct themselves in a manner consistent with their position as a positive role model to children and as a representative of YCSCO

·Immediately raise any concerns for the safety or wellbeing of a child in accordance with the YCSCO Reporting Process

·Listen to children, take their concerns seriously and allow them to have a say in the decisions that affect them

·Be visible when working with children

.Avoid being alone with children where possible, and try to ensure that other adults are present when working with children

Procedure for reporting and reaction:

.In the event of any incidents, comments, suspicions or concerns the case will be immediately reported to senior management and any cases of abuse will be investigated thoroughly

.A child reporting concerns or claiming to be the subject of abuse will be protected, taken seriously and treated with respect; they will be reassured that they are not to blame; they are never to be treated with disbelief or in a way that might induce shame or embarrassment

. Adults will be clear about what will happen next, explaining that while the case will be kept as confidential as possible it cannot remain a secret

. Any adult reporting a concern will be treated seriously and with respect, and given support in dealing with the concern

. Any Staff or representative found in breach of policy rules and places any child in risk of abuses both mentally of physically will be prosecuted.

YCSCO have many volunteers inside and outside of the country who help the organization to run smoothly and effectively with administration, computer website design, teaching, planning, and advising. Below are list of our volunteers staffs.

Sorn Lorn- the founder of YCSCO, Director, and who oversee all activities. He also teaches English and Japanese in Cambodia .

Rom Him- co-founder of YCSCO, Project Coordinator, and who is a representative in the U.S.A.
Maily Duong - co-founder of YCSCO, Finance Coordinator, and who is a representative in Australia.

Chan Perom - assistant to the YCSCO Director, help with all activities.

All volunteers went beyond their duties to help with administration, computers, and the care for children. They each give their best to help with everything even if they live inside or outside of the country.
